US Research Laboratory
THE EXPERIENCE
This US research facility has transformed its vizualisation capabilities with a groundbreaking 3D floor and wall simulation environment. This is the first-of-its-kind installation in the United States to feature a fine pixel pitch 240Hz dvLED floor and adjoining wall with Multi-Point of View (MPOV) capability.
Designed and integrated by Visbox Inc., the environment redefines collaborative simulation by replacing legacy rear-projection systems with a seamless SiliconCore 1.2mm XR LED canvas. This next-generation system enables simultaneous multi-user 3D interaction, where researchers can engage with complex datasets from their own unique physical perspectives in real time. For teams modeling critical systems or validating data, MPOV functionality is essential and only SiliconCore’s technology delivers this level of resolution, brightness and performance while maintaining visual clarity and low latency.
The display is being used to simulate data that helps define future industry standards, including those for building materials and other applications in aerospace, defense, manufacturing and healthcare. By enabling accurate, immersive visualization, the laboratory is supporting national innovation and safety at the foundational level.
Unlike VR headsets or traditional projection, SiliconCore’s LED-based approach does not require a fully darkened room. This was a key benefit for the lab’s architectural integration, allowing the space to be more flexible, accessible and comfortable for extended use. Researchers can collaborate with natural eye contact, clear sightlines and sustained focus, all of which are critical in mission-driven environments.
The display operates in tandem with Volfoni active 3D glasses and an ART tracking system, allowing multiple users to view shared volumetric content from their own perspectives. This is a significant advancement in stereoscopic research workflows. The system’s dual-eye rendering speed was a particular standout for Visbox, who cited SiliconCore’s performance as best-in-class for delivering responsive, flicker-free experiences.
To further elevate realism, Logitech surround audio with rear and side channels adds dimensional feedback and supports future use cases involving sound-responsive datasets and immersive storytelling.
BEHIND THE SCENES
At the heart of the system is a SiliconCore 1.2mm XR LED display, installed flush to form both the wall and a fully walkable floor. Operating at 240Hz with a 7680Hz refresh rate, the installation delivers stereoscopic rendering with virtually zero latency. This is essential for multi-user 3D collaboration where precision timing and clarity are non-negotiable.
This performance is powered by SiliconCore’s patented Common Cathode IQ driver technology, which regulates voltage at the pixel level to enable cooler operation, faster clock speeds and energy savings of up to 40 percent. As the only LED manufacturer designing its own driver chips, SiliconCore delivers reliability, long-term efficiency and optical performance that is unmatched in the industry.
What makes this setup uniquely effective is the walkable LED floor, which serves as a critical spatial anchor. It provides users with a grounded visual perspective that significantly enhances orientation and depth perception within the virtual environment. This was a strategic decision by the end user and Visbox, who recognized that eliminating floor-based shadows and supporting real-world spatial cues would improve both user realism and simulation accuracy.
Designing a simulation room often presents serious spatial and HVAC constraints, especially when using rear-projection. This installation addressed those challenges directly. Thanks to the lower power, modular LED design, the system fits seamlessly into the existing room architecture, taking up much less space than the existing projection based system, requiring no dark room, complex rigging or specialized ventilation. This was a major efficiency win for engineering and operations. Having a quiet, high resolution display that operates at close engagement distance with lower operating temperature ensures a much more comfortable collaborative experience.
For further scalability and maintenance, the LED PCBs used in the wall and floor are fully interchangeable, reducing spare part inventory and simplifying long-term support. The system is powered by dual NVIDIA Quadro 8DA 6000 GPUs running Unreal Engine, ensuring fluid rendering of detailed 3D content at high frame rates.
SILICONCORE SOLUTION
With over 100,000 hours of rated lifespan, silent operation and market-leading energy efficiency, SiliconCore’s 1.2mm XR LED platform delivers a sustainable, future-proof solution for one of the most advanced simulation environments in the country.
By enabling real-time, multi-user collaboration on stereoscopic content without the constraints of projection or headsets, this installation redefines what is possible in immersive government research. The display’s high brightness (1200 nits) ensures clarity even in ambient light conditions, expanding usability and room design flexibility.
This immersive lab not only supports daily research needs, but also helps shape industry standards that impact national infrastructure and materials engineering, setting a new benchmark for LED-powered visualization in simulation and government settings.
